It’s nearly the start of a new school year and I thought I’d take a moment to share what this group has become. We started so informally last year and have slowly found our way into something that seems to be working pretty well.
What PCH Isn’t
Before I share what we DO, I want to let you know a bit about what we aren’t.
This isn’t really a co-op. There is always room for a volunteer who wants to teach a class or run an event. There’s always room for families that have some time to give to doing some of the behind-the-scenes stuff, but it is never required or expected. This allows ALL families to participate, even if they don’t have time to create lessons.
PCH is also not a play group (though we do play). We like to make sure that nearly every meet-up includes an educational activity. We usually explore something that you might not find it so easy to do at home, or maybe you don’t find the time to fit it in. We do a lot of art together, and science as well. It allows us to get a little messier than we might be willing to at home, or explore something that we can discuss and learn from better as a group.
PCH does not dictate your curriculum! Most of our classes are completely stand-alone topics. We don’t take over any of your subjects. You teach how you want to at home and then join us once a week for some fun learning time together. You don’t have to use any particular curriculum (or any at all, for that matter) to be involved in the group.
What PCH Is
We like to call it “The Homeschool Group” because that’s what we are: A group of homeschool families. We get together every Tuesday to learn and play together. The children and mothers all find support and friendship here. We have unschooling families, school-at-home families and everything in between. Some families are Christian, some are secular, and many we don’t even know, because honestly the topic doesn’t come up much. You and your family are welcome here, always!
Our Tuesdays go in a bit of a cycle. We have the American Legion Hall in Luray for the first Tuesday of every month, so we use that day as our Art Day (Or party day!). We usually have a field trip on the 4th Tuesday of the month and the other two days are often a time when we build something (hammer and nails.. SO FUN) or engineer something (awesome science learning in a hands on way) or in nice weather sometimes we just have a plain old park day. We love to craft, create and explore together.
Sometimes, a month has an extra Tuesday in it and we like to try to plan something extra fun on that day! Keep your eye out on the schedule for that! ♥
How It Works:
We post events as they are thought up and supplies are priced out. Anyone who wants to attend the event can sign up right here on this website and pay in advance, if payment is required (that helps us make sure we have enough supplies!). Then, you show up on the day of the event and have fun. Super simple!
Sometimes we like to have a day where we all bring a snack to share. If that’s the case, it will be noted in the event description.
Members get discounts on all classes and most field trips. We are able to do this through fundraising that we do throughout the year and partly through member dues. Dues are $5 per month for a whole family! ($10 for gold members who get a bigger discount, especially on trips!)
Members also get to have more of a say in the direction the group takes. Member surveys, annual meetings and votes for major rule changes are all part of membership. We really want this to be a group that you LOVE and look forward to working with, so if you have a suggestion at any time, please let us know.
You Don’t Have To Be A Member…
Events are open to everyone! And you don’t have to start with us at the beginning of the year. You can jump in any time you feel like it.
So now that you know a bit about the group, go check out the Upcoming Events Calendar and tell us what you’re most looking forward to! ♥
